An expression of the hopes and worries of modern man facing science and the future, science fiction is not a homogeneous cinematographic genre. His important production is characterized by very diverse themes such as space and time travel, extraterrestrial life, the war of the worlds, the mutation of species and the future of humanity.
From crafts to industry
In 1902, Georges Méliès (1861-1938) produced Le Voyage dans la Lune, freely inspired by a novel by Jules Verne. He gives free rein to his fantasy and combines effects borrowed from the theater machinery, models and cinematographic special effects which he sometimes discovers by chance: stopping the camera, superimposing several filmed scenes.
In the first scenes of Superman, produced between 1953 and 1957 for American television according to a comic strip, the special effects are still rudimentary. Many scenes are shot in the studio and the actors are simply suspended by harnesses in front of a blue screen, which allows superimposing views of New York.
In 1968, the 2001 film by Stanley Kubrick, Odyssey of space, constitutes a stage in the evolution of the genre, through the care given to the script and the technological advance of the means implemented. Produced with the help of NASA designers, the film required four years of shooting and industrial resources. From the 1980s, the computer made it possible to produce increasingly complex and spectacular special effects.
The reflection of a society in crisis
At the beginning of the century, science appeared to bring hope and progress. This expectation is reversed after the bombing of Hiroshima in 1945. The fear of nuclear power is expressed through the evocation of genetic mutations caused by the atom or that of the survival conditions of the rare survivors of a conflict (L’Homme shrinking, Jack Arnold, 1957; The Last Shore, Stanley Kramer, 1959).
In contemporary times, the opposition of technology and primitive drives is reflected in the myth of “Aliens”, monstrous creatures which colonize and destroy the body of humans (Alien, Ridley Scott, 1979; Alien, the return, James Cameron, 1986). At the same time, the fantasy of a future society made up of new barbarians develops in the Mad Max series (Mad Max 2, George Miller, 1981).
Science fiction: an escape through the imagination
Large galactic sagas like Star Wars (Georges Lucas, 1977) happily combine influences from comics, fairy tales and mid-century science fiction novels. The viewer’s disorientation is due to the legendary universe of the story and the visual invention served by the technique.
